# Laam-Alif · لام ألف

**1.** تَخِـــــذْتُ بِحَمْـــدِ اللّٰهِ طَــــهَ خَلِيـــلاَ / وَلَمْ أَتَّخِذْ غَيْـــرَ الرَّسُـــولِ سَبِيـــلاَ

_Takhidhtu bi-ḥamdi Allāhi Ṭāhā khalīlā / wa-lam attakhidh ghayra al-Rasūli sabīlā_

I have taken, by the praise of Allah, Taha as an intimate friend, and I have taken no path other than that of the Messenger.

**2.** وَلَــمْ أَرْجُ مَخْلُوقًـــا سِـــوَاهُ فَعَلَّـــهُ / إِذَا مَا جَفَــا جَـــافٍ يَكُـــونُ خَلِيــلاَ

_Wa-lam arju makhluqan siwāhu fa-ʿallahu / idhā mā jafā jāfin yakūnu khalīlā_

I have placed my hope in no created being besides him; perhaps when the world turns cold and distant, he will remain my true friend.

**3.** فَإِنِّي مَعَ الْعِــــلاَّتِ حِــبٌّ وَخَــادِمٌ / وَلَسْتُ أَرَى غَيْرَ الْحَبِيــبِ جَمِيـلاَ

_Fa-innī maʿa al-ʿillāti ḥibbun wa-khādimun / wa-lastu arā ghayra al-ḥabībi jamīlā_

For despite my many flaws, I am a lover and a servant, and I see none beautiful except for the Beloved.

**4.** وَمَا لِي إِذَا مَا حَـلَّ خَطْبٌ سِوَاؤُهُ / فَظِــــلُّ رَسُــولِ اللّٰهِ كَــانَ ظَلِيــلاَ

_Wa-mā liyā idhā mā ḥalla khaṭbun siwa’uhu / fa-ẓillu Rasūli Allāhi kāna ẓalīlā_

I have none but him when a calamity descends, for the shadow of the Messenger of Allah is the most protective shade.

**5.** أُنَادِيــهِ يَــا طَـــهَ الْأَمِيــنُ فَإِنَّنِــي / حَلِيفُ أَسًـى مَا إِنْ وَجَدْتُ فَتِيلاَ

_Unādīhi yā Ṭāhā al-Amīnu fa-innanī / ḥalīfu asan mā in wajadtu fatīlā_

I call upon him: "O Taha, the Trustworthy!" for I am an ally of grief and have found no other thread of hope.

**6.** فَقَدْ شَدَّ فَقْرِي وَاغْتِرَابِي وَذِلَّتِــي / وَأُلْفِي سِوَى الْـهَدِي الْكَرِيمِ بَخِيلاَ

_Faqad shadda faqrī wa-ghtirābī wa-dhillatī / wa-ulfī siwā al-hadi al-karīmi bakhīlā_

My poverty, my exile, and my lowliness have become intense, and I have found everyone besides the Noble Guide to be stingy.

**7.** فَكُنْ لِيَ فِي الْأَهْلِينَ كُنْ لِي بِغَيْبَتِي / وَكُــنْ وَزَرِي إِنِّـــي أَرَاكَ جَلِيــلاَ

_Fakun liyā fī al-ahlīna kun liyā bi-ghaybatī / wa-kun wazarī innī arāka jalīlā_

So be there for me among my family, and be there for me in my absence, and be my refuge, for indeed I see you as majestic.

**8.** فَإِنْ لَمْ تُدَارِكْ فِي شُؤُونِي بِعَطْفَةٍ / وَحَاشَاكَ مَا لِي مِنْ سِوَاكَ وَكِيلاَ

_Fa-in lam tudārik fī shu’ūnī bi-ʿatfatin / wa-ḥāshāka mā liyā min siwāka wakīlā_

If you do not intervene in my affairs with a touch of compassion—and far be it from you to refuse—I have no guardian other than you.

**9.** فَأَسْبِلْ عَلَيْنَا ذَيْلَ سَتْـرٍ وَعَطْفَــةٍ / وَأَسْدِ إِلَيْنَا مِـنْ عَطَــاكَ جَزِيــلاَ

_Fa-asbil ʿalaynā dhayla satrin wa-ʿatfatin / wa-asdi ilaynā min ʿaṭāka jazīlā_

So let the veil of protection and compassion fall over us, and grant us a generous portion of your bounty.

**10.** عَلَيْــــكَ صَـــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُــمَّ سَلاَمُــهُ / مَعَ الْآلِ وَالصَّحْبِ الْكِرَامِ عُدُولاَ

_ʿAlayka ṣalātu Allāhi thumma salāmuhu / maʿa al-āli wa-l-ṣaḥbi al-kirāmi ʿudūlā_

Upon you be the blessings of Allah and then His peace, along with the Family and the noble, just Companions.
