# Harful Wa'w · حَرْفُ الْوَاوِ

**1.** وُصُولُ جَمِيعِ الْمَاسِكِينَ بِحَبْلِيَا / تَحَقَّقَهُ مَـــنْ لَـــمْ يُكَــذِّبْ بِرَبِّيَــا

_Wuṣūlu jamī‘i al-māsikīna bi-ḥabliyā / Taḥaq-qaqahu man lam yukadh-dhib bi-rabbiyā_

The arrival [at the Divine Presence] of all those who hold onto my rope is a reality confirmed by anyone who does not deny my Lord.

**2.** وَجَوْبِي فَيَافٍ فِي الْمَعَارِفِ لَمْ تُرَمْ / فَقَدْ قَصُرَ الْأَقْطَابُ عَنْ دَرْكِ شَأْوِيَا

_Wa-jawbī fayāfin fī al-ma‘ārifi lam turam / Fa-qad qaṣura al-aqṭābu ‘an darki sha’wiyā_

My journeying through the vast deserts of Gnosis is a feat never before attempted; for the [spiritual] Poles fell short of reaching my pace.

**3.** بِفَضْلِ إِلَــهِ النَّاسِ جَـــــلَّ جَلاَلُــهُ / وَحُبِّ رَسُــولِ اللّٰهِ طَـــهَ نَبِيئِيَـــا

_Bi-faḍli ilāhi al-nāsi jalla jalāluhu / Wa-ḥubbi Rasūli Allāhi Ṭāhā nabiy-yiyā_

This is by the grace of the God of Mankind—Majestic is His Glory—and the love of the Messenger of Allah, Taha my Prophet.

**4.** حَلَفْــــــتُ يَمِينًــــا أَنَّنِـــي لاَ يُحِبُّنِــي / سِوَى أَسْعَدٍ وَالْعَكْسُ فِي حَالِ بُغْضِيَا

_Ḥalaftu yamīnan annanī lā yuḥibbunī / Siwā as‘adin wal-‘aksu fī ḥāli bughḍiyā_

I have sworn a firm oath that none shall love me except the fortunate, and the opposite is true for the one who hates me.

**5.** وَقَدْ عَلِمَ الْأَقْوَامُ أَنِّــــــي خَدِيمُــهُ / فَوَصْلُ حَبِيبِ اللّٰهِ يُلْفَــى بِوَصْلِيَــا

_Wa-qad ‘alima al-aqwāmu annanī khadīmuhu / Fa-waṣlu ḥabībi Allāhi yulfā bi-waṣliyā_

People have already known that I am his servant; thus, union with the Beloved of Allah is found through union with me.

**6.** وَمَا قُلْتُ قَوْلِي شَاطِحًا مُتَبَجِّحًـــا / وَمَا مَسَّنِي سُكْــرٌ يُغَيِّـــبُ عَقْلِيَـا

_Wa-mā qultu qawlī shāṭiḥan mutabaj-jiḥan / Wa-mā massanī sukrun yughay-yibu ‘aqliyā_

I did not speak these words out of boastful self-importance (shath), nor have I been touched by a "drunkenness" that eclipses my intellect.

**7.** وَإِنَّ خُطُوطِي لِلْأَنَــــامِ سَعَــادَةٌ / فَلَمْ يَشْقَ يَوْمًا مَنْ رَآنِي وَخَطِّيَا

_Wa-inna khuṭūṭī lil-anāmi sa‘ādatun / Fa-lam yashqa yawman man ra’ānī wa-khaṭ-ṭiyā_

Indeed, my writings are a source of happiness for mankind; for no one who has seen me or my script shall ever be wretched.

**8.** وَمَا قُلْتُ هَـــذَا دُونَ إِذْنٍ وَإِنَّنِي / لَأَكْتُمُ سِـــــــرًّا لاَ يُبَــاحُ لِغَيْرِيَــا

_Wa-mā qultu hādhā dūna idhnin wa-innanī / La-aktumu sirran lā yubāḥu li-ghayriyā_

I did not say this without [Divine] permission; and indeed, I conceal a secret that is not permitted to be revealed to others.

**9.** وَذَا كُلُّهُ مِنْ حُـــبِّ سَيِّدِ مُرْسَــلٍ / عَلَيْهِ صَـــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ وَلْتُعْــلِ شَأْنِيَــا

_Wa-dhā kulluhu min ḥubbi sayyidi mursalin / ‘Alayhi ṣalātu Allāhi wal-tu‘li sha’niyā_

All of this stems from the love of the Master of Messengers; upon him be the prayer of Allah, and may it exalt my rank.

**10.** تَنَوَّرْتُهُ حَتَّـــى تَحَيَّــــرْتُ إِنَّمَــا / جَلاَلُ رَسُولِ اللّٰهِ حَيَّــرَ فِكْرِيَــا

_Tanaw-wartuhu ḥattā taḥay-yartu innamā / Jalālu Rasūli Allāhi ḥay-yara fikriyā_

I became so filled with his light that I became bewildered; indeed, the majesty of the Messenger of Allah has bewildered my thoughts.

**11.** إِفَاضَتُــــــهُ مِنْـــــــهُ إِلَيْـــهِ مَحَبَّــةً / وَسُبْحَانَ رَبِّي دَكَّ رُوحِي تَجَلِّيَــا

_Ifāḍatuhu minhu ilayhi maḥabbatan / Wa-subḥāna rabbī dakka rūḥī tajal-liyā_

His overflow comes from him and returns to him out of love; and Glory be to my Lord, who crushed my soul with a [Divine] Manifestation.

**12.** وَمِنْ سِرِّ هَــذَا مِتُّ شَوْقًا وَمَغْرَمًا / أَزِيــــدُ اشْتِيَاقًا حِيـــنَ زِدْتُ تَدَلِّيَــا

_Wa-min sirri hādhā mittu shawqan wa-maghraman / Azīdu-shtiyāqan ḥīna zidtu tadal-liyā_

From the secret of this, I died of longing and infatuation; I increase in yearning even as I increase in my nearness and hanging [upon him].

**13.** فَمَنْ لِي بِوَصْلٍ لِلْحَبِيبِ وَلَيْتَنِي / أُجَـــاوِرُهُ فِـــي حَالَتَيْـــهِ تَمَنِّيَــا

_Fa-man lī bi-waṣlin lil-ḥabībi wa-laytanī / Ujāwiruhu fī ḥālatayhi tamanniyā_

Who will grant me union with the Beloved? If only I could be his neighbor in both his states (life and the hereafter), as I so wish.

**14.** عَلَيْـــــهِ صَــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُمَّ سَلاَمُــهُ / تُسَاوِي صَــلاَةَ الذَّاكِرِيـنَ قُبَيْلِيَا

_‘Alayhi ṣalātu Allāhi thumma salāmuhu / Tusāwī ṣalāta al-dhākirīna qubayliyā_

Upon him be the prayer of Allah and then His peace; a prayer equal to the prayers of all the rememberers who came before me.

**15.** عَلَيْهِ مَعَ الْآلِ الْكِرَامِ وَصَحْبِــهِ / وَمَنْ سَلَكُوا نَهْجَ الْمَحَبَّةِ قَبْلِيَا

_‘Alayhi ma‘a al-āli al-kirāmi wa-ṣaḥbihi / Wa-man salakū nahja al-maḥabbati qabliyā_

Upon him, along with the noble family and his companions, and whoever walked the path of love before me.
