# Harful 'Ayn · حَرْفُ الْعَيْنِ

**1.** عَلَى الْمُصْطَفَى الْمُخْتَارِ زَيْنِ الْمَجَامِعِ / غَرَامِي وَتَهْيَامِي وَسَيْــــلُ مَدَامِعِــي

_‘Ala al-Muṣṭafā al-Mukhtāri zayni al-majāmi‘i / Gharāmī wa-tahyāmī wa-saylu madāmi‘ī_

Upon the Chosen One, the Selected, the Ornament of Gatherings, is my ecstatic love, my infatuation, and the flood of my tears.

**2.** ثَـــــوَى فِــي سُوَيْدَائِـــي وِدَادُ مُحَمَّــدٍ / أُكَابِــــدُ شَوْقًـــا بَيْـــنَ قَـــوْمٍ هَوَاجِــعِ

_Thawā fī suwaydā’ī widādu Muḥammadin / Ukābidu shawqan bayna qawmin hawāji‘i_

The love of Muhammad has settled in the core of my heart; I endure the pains of longing among a people who are fast asleep.

**3.** مَتَى انْتَبَهَتْ جَفْنِي ذَكَـــرْتُ مُحَمَّــدًا / وَأَذْكُرُهُ فِي خَلْوَتِــــي وَمَجَامِعِــي

_Matā-ntabahat jafnī dhakartu Muḥammadan / Wa-adhkuruhu fī khalwatī wa-majāmi‘ī_

Whenever my eyelids awaken, I remember Muhammad; and I remember him in my solitude and in my public gatherings.

**4.** وَعِنْدَ سُرُورِي وَاكْتِئَابِي وَإِنْ أَنَمْ / أَرَى أَنَّنِـــي فِـــي حَيِّـــهِ وَالْمَرَابِــعِ

_Wa-‘inda surūrī wa-kti’ābī wa-in anam / Arā annanī fī ḥayyihi wal-marābi‘i_

In my joy and my depression, and even if I sleep—I see myself in his neighborhood and his dwellings.

**5.** خَرِيفِي وَصَيْفِي وَالرَّبِيعُ جَمِيعُهَا / كَذَاكَ شِتَائِي ذِكْرُ جَمْـعِ الْجَوَامِــعِ

_Kharīfī wa-ṣayfī wal-rabī‘u jamī‘uhā / Kadhalika shitā’ī dhikru jam-‘i al-jawāmi‘i_

My autumn, my summer, and the spring, all of them—likewise my winter—are the remembrance of the "Collector of All Things."

**6.** أَيَا سَيِّدِي خَيْرَ الْــــوَرَى وَنَبِيَّنَــا / يَقِينًا أُنَادِي حَاضِرِي الدَّهْرَ سَامِعِي

_Ayā sayyidī khayra al-warā wa-nabiyyanā / Yaqīnan unādī ḥāḍirī al-dahra sāmi‘ī_

O my master, the best of mortals and our Prophet; with certainty I call upon you as one who is present throughout time, hearing me.

**7.** أَجِرْنِي جِوَارًا هَاشِمِيًّا فَلَـــمْ أَخَــفْ / فَلَمْ يَكُ يَوْمًا مَــنْ تُجِــرْهُ بِضَائِــعِ

_Ajirnī jiwāran hāshimiyyan falam akhaf / Falam yaku yawman man tujir-hu bi-ḍā’i‘i_

Grant me a Hashemite protection, and I shall not fear; for never has the one you protect been lost.

**8.** أَجِرْنِي بِمَا يُغْنِي عَنِ الْكُلِّ سَرْمَدًا / فَلَمْ يَكُ ذَنْبِي مِـــنْ جَــدَاكَ بِمَانِــعِ

_Ajirnī bimā yughnī ‘ani al-kulli sarmadan / Falam yaku dhanbī min jadāka bi-māni‘i_

Grant me refuge through that which makes me eternally independent of all else; for my sin is no barrier to your overwhelming generosity.

**9.** فَإِنِّــــــي ذَلِيــــلٌ عَاجِــــزٌ مُتَحَيِّــرٌ / فَقِيرٌ حَقِيرٌ ضَــارِعٌ أَيُّ ضَــارِعِ

_Fa-innanī dhalīlun ‘ājizun mutaḥayyirun / Faqīrun ḥaqīrun ḍāri‘un ayyu ḍāri‘i_

For I am low, helpless, and bewildered; poor, insignificant, and humble—the humblest of the humble.

**10.** وَمَا لِيَ دَفْـعٌ وَاجْتِلاَبٌ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ / لَدَيَّ سِوَى مَدْحِي وَدَفْعِ الْمُدَافِـعِ

_Wa-mā liya daf-‘un wa-jtilābun wa-lam yakun / Ladayya siwā madḥī wa-daf-‘i al-mudāfi‘i_

I have no power to repel harm or attract benefit; I have nothing but my praise and the defense provided by my Defender.

**11.** وَقَدْ لَعِبَتْ أَيْـــدِي الْغَوَايَةِ بُرْهَــةً / بِجَانِبِ مَنْ لَمْ يُحْصَنَــنْ بِالْمَدَافِـــعِ

_Wa-qad la‘ibat aydī al-ghawāyati burhatan / Bi-jānibi man lam yuḥṣanan bil-madāfi‘i_

The hands of misguidance played for a while with the side of one who was not fortified by the ultimate defenses.

**12.** وَلِلَّهِ عِـــــــزٌّ بَعْــــدَهُ لِرَسُولِــــــهِ / وَلِلْمُومِنِيـــنَ الْمُقْتَفِيــــنَ لِشَــارِعِ

_Wa-lillāhi ‘izzun ba‘dahu li-Rasūlihi / Wa-lil-mūminīna al-muqtafīna li-shāri‘i_

To Allah belongs might, and after Him to His Messenger, and to the believers who follow the Sacred Law.

**13.** فَيَا رَبِّ فَضْلاً أَعْــــطِ عِـــزَّةَ دِينِنَــا / سَرِيعًا وَتَمْحُو بُطْلَ أَهْلِ الصَّوَامِـعِ

_Fa-yā rabbi faḍlan a‘ṭi ‘izzata dīninā / Sarī‘an wa-tamḥū buṭla ahli al-ṣawāmi‘i_

O my Lord, by Your grace, grant victory and might to our religion quickly, and erase the falsehood of the people of the cloisters.

**14.** بِجَاهِ رَسُولِ اللّٰهِ أَحْمَــــدَ خَيْرِ مَــنْ / أَتَانَا مِنَ الْمَوْلَـــى بِخَيْــرِ الشَّرَائِــعِ

_Bi-jāhi Rasūli Allāhi Aḥmada khayri man / Atānā mina al-Mawlā bi-khayri al-sharā’i‘i_

By the rank of the Messenger of Allah, Ahmad, the best of those who brought us the finest of laws from the Master.

**15.** عَلَيْـــــــهِ صَــــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُـــمَّ سَلاَمُــهُ / صَلاَةً بِهَا فَيْضُ الْجَـــــدَا وَالْمَنَافِــعِ

_‘Alayhi ṣalātu Allāhi thumma salāmuhu / Ṣalātan bihā fayḍu al-jadā wal-manāfi‘i_

Upon him be the prayer of Allah and then His peace; a prayer through which flows the flood of bounty and benefits.

**16.** عَلَيْـــــهِ صَــــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُـــمَّ سَلاَمُـــهُ / وَتَكْثُرُ فِي كُـــلِّ الْبِـــلاَدِ جَوَامِعِــي

_‘Alayhi ṣalātu Allāhi thumma salāmuhu / Wa-takthuru fī kulli al-bilādi jawāmi‘ī_

Upon him be the prayer of Allah and then His peace; and may my mosques increase in every land.

**17.** عَلَيْـــــهِ صَــــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُــــمَّ سَلاَمُــهُ / أُنِيطُ بِخَيْرِ الْخَلْــــــقِ كُلَّ مَطَامِعِــي

_‘Alayhi ṣalātu Allāhi thumma salāmuhu / Unīṭu bi-khayri al-khalqi kulla maṭāmi‘ī_

Upon him be the prayer of Allah and then His peace; I attach all my desires to the Best of Creation.

**18.** عَلَيْــــــهِ صَــــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُـــمَّ سَلاَمُــهُ / صَلاَةً بِهَا تَبْقَى لِمَوْتِـــي مَسَامِعِــي

_‘Alayhi ṣalātu Allāhi thumma salāmuhu / Ṣalātan bihā tabqā li-mawtī masāmi‘ī_

Upon him be the prayer of Allah and then His peace; a prayer through which my hearing remains sound until my death.

**19.** وَالْأَبْصَارُ وَالْقُوَى بِمَدْحِكَ سَيِّـــدِي / عَلَيْكَ صَلاَةٌ مِنْ جَمِيـــعِ أَصَابِعِــي

_Wal-abṣāru wal-quwā bi-madḥika sayyidī / ‘Alayka ṣalātun min jamī‘i aṣābi‘ī_

And my sight and my faculties, through your praise, my master; upon you is a prayer from all my fingers.

**20.** عَلَيْكَ مَــــعَ الْآلِ الْكِـرَامِ وَصَحْبِــهِ / وَكُلِّ الَّذِي يَقْفُــــوكَ زَيْنَ الْمَجَــامِعِ

_‘Alayka ma‘a al-āli al-kirāmi wa-ṣaḥbihi / Wa-kulli al-ladhī yaqfūka zayna al-majāmi‘i_

Upon you, along with the noble family and his companions, and everyone who follows you, O Ornament of Gatherings.
