# Harfu Laamil Alif · حَرْفُ لَامِ الْأَلِفِ

**1.** لَدَى الْمُصْطَفَى هَبْ لِي رِضًا وَقَبُولاَ / فَقَدْ عَزَّنِـــــي نَيْلِــي إِلَيْــــهِ وُصُـــولاَ

_Lada al-Muṣṭafā hab lī riḍan wa-qabūlā / Fa-qad ‘azzanī naylī ilayhi wuṣūlā_

In the presence of the Chosen One, grant me pleasure and acceptance, for reaching union with him has become difficult for me.

**2.** وَذَا عَجَبٌ كَالْعِيـــسِ وَالْمَاءُ فَوْقَهَــا / تَمُوتُ ظِمَــــــــاءً مَـــا تَنَالُ سَبِيـــلاَ

_Wa-dhā ‘ajabun kal-‘īsi wal-mā’u fawqahā / Tamūtu ẓimā’an mā tanālu sabīlā_

This is a wonder—like the camels who carry water upon their backs, yet die of thirst because they cannot find a way to it.

**3.** وَقَدْ شَدَّ فَقْرِي وَافْتِقَارِي وَلَمْ أَجِـــدْ / سِوَى الْمُصْطَفَى الْمَاحِي يُنِيلُ فَتِيــلاَ

_Wa-qad shadda faqrī wa-ftiqārī wa-lam ajid / Siwā al-Muṣṭafā al-Māḥī yunīlu fatīlā_

My poverty and neediness have become severe, and I have found none but the Chosen One, the Eraser, to grant even the smallest bit.

**4.** جَنَيْتُ كَثِيرًا فَالرَّجَاءُ يَقُــــــودُنِيــي / إِلَيْهِ وَآثَامِــــــــي تَكُـــــونُ كُبُــولاَ

_Janaytu kathīran fal-rajā’u yaqūdunī / Ilayhi wa-āthāmī takūnu kubūlā_

I have sinned much, but hope leads me to him, even while my sins act as shackles.

**5.** عَلَى أَنَّ أَوْسَاخَ الذُّنُوبِ بِبَحْــــرِهِ / بِلاَ أَثَرٍ يَبْقَى وَجِئْتُ الرَّسُـــــولاَ

_‘Ala anna awsākha al-dhunūbi bi-baḥrihi / Bilā atharin yabqā wa-ji’tu al-Rasūlā_

Yet the filth of sins, in the ocean of his [grace], leaves no trace behind; thus I have come to the Messenger.

**6.** عَلَيْهِ صَلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُـــــــــمَّ سَلاَمُـــهُ / يَكُونُ الْمُقَفَّى بِالْعَطَــــــاءِ كَفِيـــلاَ

_‘Alayhi ṣalātu Allāhi thumma salāmuhu / Yakūnu al-Muqaffā bil-‘aṭā’i kafīlā_

Upon him be the prayer of Allah and then His peace; may the "Followed One" be the guarantor of bounty.

**7.** عَلَيْهِ صَـــــــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُـــمَّ سَلاَمُــهُ / فَلَسْتُ أَرَى غَيْرَ الرَّسُولِ وَكِيـلاَ

_‘Alayhi ṣalātu Allāhi thumma salāmuhu / Falas-tu arā ghayra al-Rasūli wakīlā_

Upon him be the prayer of Allah and then His peace; for I see none as a guardian except the Messenger.

**8.** عَلَيْهِ صَـــــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُـــمَّ سَلاَمُــهُ / فَقَدْ طَالَمَا أَسْــــدَى إِلَيَّ جَزِيــلاَ

_‘Alayhi ṣalātu Allāhi thumma salāmuhu / Fa-qad ṭālamā asdā ilayya jazīlā_

Upon him be the prayer of Allah and then His peace; for he has long bestowed great favors upon me.

**9.** عَلَيْهِ صَــــــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُمَّ سَلاَمُـــهُ / مَلاَذِي أَرَاهُ فِي الْخُطُوبِ جَلِيلاَ

_‘Alayhi ṣalātu Allāhi thumma salāmuhu / Malādhī arāhu fī al-khuṭūbi jalīlā_

Upon him be the prayer of Allah and then His peace; I see him as my magnificent refuge during calamities.

**10.** عَلَيْهِ صَلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُـــــمَّ سَلاَمُـــهُ / أَنَالُ شَفَاعَــــاتِ الشَّفِيـعِ مُنِيـــلاَ

_‘Alayhi ṣalātu Allāhi thumma salāmuhu / Anālu shafā‘āti al-Shafī‘i munīlā_

Upon him be the prayer of Allah and then His peace; that I may attain the intercession of the Intercessor.

**11.** عَلَيْـــــــــهِ صَـــــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُـــمَّ سَلاَمُـــهُ / فَتَخْتَــــــارُ أَنْصَـــارِي سَرَاةً عُــــدُولاَ

_‘Alayhi ṣalātu Allāhi thumma salāmuhu / Fa-takhtāru anṣārī sarātan ‘udūlā_

Upon him be the prayer of Allah and then His peace; may he choose my helpers to be noble and just leaders.

**12.** عَلَيْهِ صَـــــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُمَّ سَلاَمُـــهُ / أَدُومُ بِظِــــــلٍّ لاَ يَزَالُ ظَلِيـــلاَ

_‘Alayhi ṣalātu Allāhi thumma salāmuhu / Adūmu bi-ẓillin lā yazālu ẓalīlā_

Upon him be the prayer of Allah and then His peace; that I may remain in a shade that never fades.

**13.** عَلَيْهِ صَـــــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُمَّ سَلاَمُــهُ / أُطِيعُ كَحَذْوِي بِالنِّعَالِ الرَّسُولاَ

_‘Alayhi ṣalātu Allāhi thumma salāmuhu / Uṭī‘u ka-ḥadhwī bin-ni‘āli al-Rasūlā_

Upon him be the prayer of Allah and then His peace; that I may follow the Messenger as closely as a sandal follows the foot.

**14.** عَلَيْهِ صَـــــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُمَّ سَلاَمُـــهُ / إِذَا مِتُّ فِي الْفِرْدَوْسِ نِلْتُ مَقِيلاَ

_‘Alayhi ṣalātu Allāhi thumma salāmuhu / Idhā mittu fī al-Firdawsi niltu maqīlā_

Upon him be the prayer of Allah and then His peace; so that when I die, I find a place of rest in Paradise.

**15.** عَلَيْهِ مَعَ الْآلِ الْكِرَامِ وَصَحْبِهِ / عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ لاَ أَزَالُ كَمِيــلاَ

_‘Alayhi ma‘a al-āli al-kirāmi wa-ṣaḥbihi / ‘Ala kulli ḥālin lā azālu kamīlā_

Upon him, along with the noble family and his companions; in every state, may I remain perfected.
