# Harful Waaw · حَرْفُ الْوَاوِ

**1.** وِدَادُ حَبِيبِ اللّٰهِ مَنْ لاَ لَهُ شَـرْوَى / بِهِ شُغْلُ قَلْبِي لاَ سُعَادُ وَلاَ أَرْوَى

_Widādu ḥabībi Allāhi man lā lahu sharwā / Bi-hi shugh-lu qalbī lā Su‘ādu wa-lā Arwā_

The affection for the Beloved of Allah, who has no equal—with him is the preoccupation of my heart, not with [the poetic muses] Su‘ad or Arwa.

**2.** ضَــلاَلٌ قَدِيـــمٌ وَهْوَ نَهْجٌ مُقَــوَّمٌ / فَضِدٌّ بِضِدٍّ فَلْتَذَلَّلْ لِمَـــنْ تَهْــوَى

_Ḍalālun qadīmun wa-huwa nahjun muqawwamun / Fa-ḍiddun bi-ḍiddin faltadhallal liman tahwā_

It is an ancient [ecstatic] "misguidance," yet it is a straight path; thus, contrast with its opposite, and humble yourself to the one you love.

**3.** بِهِ الرُّسْلُ وَالْأَقْطَابُ هَامُوا وَأُرْشِدُوا / وَقَدْ تَرَكُوا مِنْ بَعْدِ ذَا بَحْــرَهُ رَهْــوَا

_Bi-hi al-rusulu wal-aqṭābu hāmū wa-urshidū / Wa-qad tarakū min ba‘di dhā baḥrahu rahwā_

Through him, the Messengers and the Poles (saints) were infatuated and guided; and after that, they left his ocean [wide and] calm for others.

**4.** مُحَمَّـــدُ مَحْبُوبِـــي مُحَمَّــدُ مَسْنَــدِي / مُحَمَّدُ شُغْلِي فِي حَيَاتِي وَلاَ غَـرْوَى

_Muḥammadu maḥbūbī Muḥammadu masnadī / Muḥammadu shugh-lī fī ḥayātī wa-lā gharwā_

Muhammad is my beloved, Muhammad is my support; Muhammad is my preoccupation in my life, and no wonder!

**5.** فَمَهْمَا قَضَى الْهَــادِي فَإِنِّي مُسَلِّمٌ / وَقَاضٍ سِوَاهُ لَمْ أُرِدْهُ وَلَمْ أَهْــوَا

_Famahmā qaḍā al-Hādī fa-innī musallimun / Wa-qāḍin siwāhu lam urid-hu wa-lam ahwā_

Whatever the Guide (the Prophet) decrees, I am in total submission; I desire no judge besides him, nor do I love any other.

**6.** فَمَنْ رَامَ مِنِّــــي فَلْيَمُـــتَّ بِحَبْلِــهِ / وَإِلاَّ فَيَأْبَى اللّٰهُ وَالْغَيْــرُ مَا يَقْــوَى

_Faman rāma minnī falyamutta bi-ḥablihi / Wa-illā fa-yab’ā Allāhu wal-ghayru mā yaqwā_

Whoever wants anything from me, let him hold fast to his rope; otherwise, Allah refuses, and no one else has the power.

**7.** أَلِينُ لِمَنْ يَقْفُـــو الْأَمِيـــنَ وَإِنَّنِــي / شَدِيدٌ وَصَعْبٌ إِذْ أُقَادُ إِلَى الْأَهْـوَا

_Alīnu liman yaq-fū al-Amīna wa-innanī / Shadīdun wa-ṣa‘bun idh uqādu ila al-ahwā_

I am gentle with those who follow the Trustworthy One; but I am firm and difficult when led toward whims.

**8.** فَمَــــنْ قَادَ لِلتَّثْلِيــثِ فَهْــوَ مُــزَوِّرٌ / أُدَمِّرُهُ بِالْحَـــقِّ وَالسَّنَـــدِ الْأَقْــوَى

_Faman qāda lit-tathlīthi fahuwa muzawwirun / Udammiruhu bil-ḥaqqi wal-sanadi al-aqwā_

Whoever calls to the "Trinity" is a forger; I destroy his claims with the Truth and the strongest support.

**9.** أَبَيْنَــا سِـوَى التَّوْحِيــدِ وَالسُّنَّــةِ الَّتِــي / عَنِ الْمُصْطَفَى تُرْوَى وَعَنْ صَحْبِهِ تُرْوَى

_Abaynā siwā al-Tawḥīdi wal-Sunnati al-latī / ‘An al-Muṣṭafā turwā wa-‘an ṣaḥbihi turwā_

We refuse everything except Divine Unity (Tawhid) and the Sunnah that is narrated from the Chosen One and his companions.

**10.** أَفِي اللّٰهِ شَكٌّ أَوْ بِأَحْمَـــدَ فَاسْمَعُــوا / فَكُلٌّ سِوَاهُ مُفْتَـرًى كَـــذِبٌ دَعْـوَى

_A-fī Allāhi shakkun aw bi-Aḥmada fasma‘ū / Fa-kullun siwāhu muftaran kadhibun da‘wā_

Is there any doubt about Allah or about Ahmad? Then listen: everything besides him is a fabrication, a lie, and a [false] claim.

**11.** فَعِيسَـــى عُبَيْــــدُ اللّٰهِ وَهْــوَ أَمِينُــــهُ / وَرُوحٌ مِنَ الرُّوحِ الْأَمِينِ فَمَا الْإِغْوَا

_Fa-‘Īsā ‘ubaydu Allāhi wa-huwa amīnuhu / Wa-rūḥun mina al-rūḥi al-Amīni famā al-ighwā_

Jesus is but a small servant of Allah and His trustworthy one; he is a spirit from the "Trustworthy Spirit"—so where is the delusion?

**12.** وَآدَمُ مِـــنْ ذَا الــــرُّوحِ وَهْــوَ مُحَمَّــدٌ / كَــذَا جَبْرَئِيلُ مِنْ حَبِيبِي رَأَى الْأَضْوَا

_Wa-Ādamu min dhā al-rūḥi wa-huwa Muḥammadun / Kadhā Jabra’īlu min ḥabībī ra’ā al-aḍwā_

And Adam is from this Spirit—and he is Muhammad; likewise, Gabriel saw the lights [of existence] from my beloved.

**13.** مُحَمَّـــــدُ عَبْـــــدُ اللّٰهِ عَبْـــدٌ مُكَــــرَّمٌ / بِهِ يُرْفَعُ التَّثْلِيثُ وَالْجَــدْبُ وَالْأَسْــوَا

_Muḥammadu ‘abdu Allāhi ‘abdun mukarramun / Bi-hi yur-fa‘u al-tathlīthu wal-jad-bu wal-aswā_

Muhammad is the servant of Allah, an honored servant; through him, trinity, drought, and evils are lifted.

**14.** بِهِ مُزِّقَ الْحِزْبُ الْمُضَلِّـــلُ عَـنْ هَـوًى / وَيُهْلَكُ مَنْ حَادُوا عَنِ الْمُصْطَفَى الْمَأْوَى

_Bi-hi muzziqa al-ḥizbu al-muḍallilu ‘an hawan / Wa-yuhlaku man ḥādū ‘an al-Muṣṭafā al-ma’wā_

Through him, the party that misleads through whims was torn apart; and those who deviate from the Chosen One—the refuge—perish.

**15.** فَيَا وَيْحَهُـــمْ تَبًّـــا لِدِيــنِ زَعِيمِهِــمْ / فَبَغْيٌ وَعُدْوَانٌ وَسَعْيٌ إِلَى إِغْــوَا

_Fa-yā wayḥahum tabban li-dīni za‘īmihim / Fa-baghyun wa-‘udwānun wa-sa‘yun ila ighwā_

Woe to them! Ruin be upon the religion of their leader; for it is but transgression, enmity, and a striving toward delusion.

**16.** فَيَا رَبِّ عَجِّـــلْ باِلْـهَــلاَكِ لِحِزْبِــهِ / وَتَسْلُبُ مِنْهُ كُلَّ أَمْرٍ كَمَـــا أَهْــوَى

_Fa-yā rabbi ‘ajjil bil-halāki li-ḥizbihi / Wa-taslubu minhu kulla amrin kamā ahwā_

O my Lord! Hasten the destruction of his party, and strip from him every matter, just as I desire.

**17.** بِجَــاهِ رَسُــــولِ اللّٰهِ حَقِّـــقْ رَجَاءَنَــا / سَرِيعًا كَمَا نَدْعُوكَ فِي الْجَهْرِ وَالنَّجْوَى

_Bi-jāhi Rasūli Allāhi ḥaqqiq rajā’anā / Sarī‘an kamā nad‘ūka fī al-jah-ri wal-najwā_

By the rank of the Messenger of Allah, realize our hope, quickly, just as we call upon You in public and in private.

**18.** عَلَيْــــهِ صَــــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُـــمَّ سَلاَمُــهُ / وَآلٍ وَأَصْحَابٍ بِذِكْرِهِـــمُ أَرْوَى

_‘Alayhi ṣalātu Allāhi thumma salāmuhu / Wa-ālin wa-asḥābin bi-dhikrihimu arwā_

Upon him be the prayer of Allah and then His peace, and upon the family and companions—through whose mention I am quenched.
