# Harfut Twaa · حَرْفُ الطَّاء

**1.** طَوَى لِي رَسُولُ للهِ وَهْوَ مُشَيِّعِـــي / وَقَدْ نَالَنِــي مَــا كَـانَ جِـــدَّ مُمَنَّــعِ

_Ṭawā liy rasūlu-llāhi wa huwa mushayyiʿī / wa qad nālanī mā kāna jidda mumannaʿī_

The Messenger of Allah folded the distances for me while he was my companion, and I attained what was once utterly forbidden.

**2.** طَوَى لِي رَسُولُ للهِ وَهْوَ مُشَيِّعِـــي / وَقَدْ نَالَنِــي مَــا كَـانَ جِـــدَّ مُمَنَّــعِ

_Ṭawā liy rasūlu-llāhi wa huwa mushayyiʿī / wa qad nālanī mā kāna jidda mumannaʿī_

The Messenger of Allah folded the distances for me while he was my companion, and I attained what was once utterly forbidden.

**3.** خَبَتْ كُـلُّ نَـــارٍ أَوْقَدُوهَا عَــدَاوَةً / لِخَادِمِـــــهِ فَالْكُــلُّ أَيُّ مُضَيَّـــــعِ

_Khabat kullu nārin awqadūhā ʿadāwatan / li-khādimihi fa-l kullu ayyu muḍayyaʿī_

Every fire they kindled in enmity against his servant has been extinguished, so all of them are utterly lost.

**4.** طَبَانِــي وِدَادُ الْمُنْحَمِنَّا وَقَادَنِــي / غَرَامِي لَــهُ وَالْخُلْقُ مِنْهُ مُشَجِّعِي

_Ṭabānī widādu-l munḥaminna wa qādanī / gharāmī lahu wa-l khulqu minhu mushajjiʿī_

The affection of the Bestower charmed me and my passion for him led me, and his noble character is my encourager.

**5.** طَبِيبٌ كَــرِيمٌ رَاحِمٌ وَهْــوَ نَافِــعٌ / وَسِيلَةُ كُلِّ النَّاسِ فِي كُلِّ مَوْقِــعِ

_Ṭabībun karīmun rāḥimun wa huwa nāfiʿun / wasīlatu kulli-n nāsi fī kulli mawqiʿī_

A generous, merciful, and beneficial physician; he is the means for all people in every situation.

**6.** طَوَائِفُـــهُ خَيْــــرُ الطَّوَائِـــفِ كُلِّهَــا / بِهِمْ ضَاءَتِ الْأَرْجَاءُ فِي كُلِّ مَرْبَــعِ

_Ṭawā’ifuhu khayru-ṭ ṭawā’ifi kullihā / bihim ḍā’ati-l arjā’u fī kulli marbaʿī_

His groups are the best of all groups; through them, the horizons shone in every quarter.

**7.** لَقَدْ هَاجَ شَوْقِي وَالْبَلاَبِلُ مَوْهِنًا / لَدَى جُوْسَ فِي قَوْمٍ رُقُودٍ وَهُجَّعِ

_Laqad hāja shawqī wa-l balābilu mawninan / ladā Jūsa fī qawmin ruqūdin wa hujjaʿī_

My longing and anxieties were stirred in the late night while at Jos, among people sleeping and slumbering.

**8.** فَشَخْصِي لَدَيْهِمْ وَالْفُـــؤَادُ بِطَيْبَــةٍ / بِجِيرَانِ صِدْقٍ سَاجِدِينَ وَرُكَّــعِ

_Fa-shakhṣī ladayhim wa-l fu’ādu bi-Ṭaybatin / bi-jīrāni ṣidqin sājidīna wa rukkaʿī_

So my physical self is with them while my heart is in Tayba (Medina), with neighbors of truth who are prostrating and bowing.

**9.** أَلاَ يَا رَسُولَ اللّٰهِ جُدْ لِي بِنَظْـرَةٍ / تَفُــكُّ بِهَا قَيْـــدِي بِتَيْهَــاءَ بَلْقَــعِ

_Alā yā rasūla-llāhi jud liy bi-naẓratin / tafukku bihā qaydī bi-tayhā’a balqaʿī_

O Messenger of Allah, grant me a glance through which You break my chains in a desolate wilderness.

**10.** وَتُلْحِقُنِي بِالسَّابِقِيــــنَ عَلِمْتُهُــمْ / أَبِي بَكْرٍ الْأَعْلَى الْوَزِيرِ الْمُتَبَّعِ

_Wa tulḥiqunī bi-s sābiqīna ʿalimtuhum / Abī Bakrini-l aʿlā-l wazīri-l muttabaʿī_

And join me to the foremost ones whom I have known: Abu Bakr the exalted, the followed minister.

**11.** وَكَالسَيِّدِ الْفَارُوقِ حِبِّيَ مَنْ غَــدَا / سِرَاجًا لَنَا وَسْطَ الْجِنَانِ السَّمَيْدَعِ

_Wa ka-s sayyidi-l fārūqi ḥibbī man ghadā / sirājan lanā wasṭa-l jināni-s samaydaʿī_

And like the master al-Faruq (Umar), my beloved who became a lamp for us in the midst of the noble gardens.

**12.** وَعُثْمَانَ ذِي النُّورَيْنِ وَاعِي كَلاَمِهِ / وَجَامِعِــــهِ إِذْ لاَتَ حِيــنَ مُجَمَّــعِ

_Wa ʿUthmāna dhi-n nūrayni wāʿī kalāmihi / wa jāmiʿihi idh lāta ḥīna mujammaʿī_

And Uthman of the Two Lights, the preserver of his words and its collector when it was the time for gathering.

**13.** وَكَالصِّنْوِ وَالصِّهْرِ الْمُفَخَّمِ بَابِــهِ / عَلِيٍّ وَلِيِّ الْحَقِّ حِصْنِي الْمُمَنَّــعِ

_Wa ka-ṣ ṣinwi wa-ṣ ṣihri-l mufakhkhami bābihi / ʿAliyyin waliyyi-l ḥaqqi ḥiṣnī-l mumannaʿī_

And like the peer and the magnificent son-in-law at his door, Ali, the friend of the Truth, my fortified fortress.

**14.** وَطَلْحَةَ سَعْدٍ وَالزُّبَيْـــرِ سَعِيدِنَــا / وَنَجْلِ جَرَاحٍ وَابْنِ عَوْفِ الْمُقَنَّعِ

_Wa Ṭalḥata Saʿdin wa-z Zubayri Saʿīdinā / wa najli Jarrāḥin wa-bni ʿAwfi-l muqannaʿī_

And Talha, Sa'd, al-Zubayr our prosperous one, the son of Jarrah, and the veiled son of Awf.

**15.** وَحَمْــزَةَ وَالْعَبَّاسِ وَاللَّيْثِ خَالِــدٍ / أُوْلَئِكَ قَوْمِي نَهْجُهُمْ خَيْــرُ مَهْيَــعِ

_Wa Ḥamzata wa-l ʿAbbāsi wa-l laythi Khālidin / ulā’ika qawmī nahjuhum khayru mahyaʿī_

And Hamza, al-Abbas, and the lion Khalid; those are my people, their path is the best of ways.

**16.** وَأَيُّ نَبِــــــيٍّ جَــــاءَ مِثْـــلُ مُحَمَّـــدٍ / وَمَنْ حَازَ وَحْيًا مِثْلَ ذِكْرِكَ فَاصْدَعِ

_Wa ayyu nabiyyin jā’a mithlu Muḥammadin / wa man ḥāza waḥyan mithla dhikrika fa-ṣdaʿī_

What Prophet has come like Muhammad? And who has possessed a revelation like Your remembrance? So proclaim it.

**17.** فَمُوسَى كَلِيمٌ قَـــدْ سَقَى اللّٰهُ قَوْمَــهُ / بِهِ فَاضَ مَاءٌ مِنْ رُخَـــامٍ مُرَبَّــعِ

_Fa-Mūsā kalīmun qad saqā-llāhu qawmahu / bihi fāḍa mā’un min rukhāmin murabbaʿī_

For Moses was the Speaker and Allah gave water to his people through him, as water overflowed from a square marble.

**18.** وَلَيْـــسَ يُحَاكِي مَا أَرَانَا مُحَمَّــدٌ / سَقَانَا بِمَاءٍ فَاضَ مِنْ بَيْنِ أَصْبُعِ

_Wa laysa yuḥākī mā arānā Muḥammadun / saqānā bi-mā’in fāḍa min bayni aṣbuʿī_

But it does not resemble what Muhammad showed us; he gave us drink with water that overflowed from between his fingers.

**19.** وَبَعْدَ انْفِلاَقِ الْبَحْرِ شَقَّ مُحَمَّـــدٌ / لَنَا قَمَرًا فَــوْقَ الْهَـــوَاءِ الْمُرَفَّــعِ

_Wa baʿda-nfilāqi-l baḥri shaqqa Muḥammadun / lanā qamaran fawqa-l hawā’i-l muraffaʿī_

And after the parting of the sea, Muhammad split the moon for us above the elevated air.

**20.** وَأَيُّ صِحَابٍ مِثْلُ مَنْ قَدْ ذَكَرْتُهُمْ / فَلَمْ تَرَ عَيْنٌ شِبْهَ قَوْمِي بِمَوْضِـــعِ

_Wa ayyu ṣiḥābin mithlu man qad dhakartuhum / fa-lam tara ʿaynun shibha qawmī bi-mawḍiʿī_

And what companions are like those I have mentioned? No eye has seen the like of my people in any place.

**21.** فَمَــــا النُّقَبَاءُ الْمُصْطَفَــــوْنَ بِشِبْهِهِــمْ / وَأَنْصَارُ عِيسَى دُونَ صَحْبِ الْمُشَفَّعِ

_Fa-mā-n nuqabā’u-l muṣṭafawna bi-shibhihim / wa anṣāru ʿĪsā dūna ṣaḥbi-l mushaffaʿī_

The chosen deputies are not like them, and the helpers of Jesus are below the companions of the Intercessor.

**22.** أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ الْمَاحِي الضَّلاَلَ مُحَمَّــدًا / أُحِبُّكَ حَقًّــا وَالشُّهُودُ أَجَـــلْ مَعِــي

_Abā-l Qāsimi-l māḥī-ḍ ḍalāla Muḥammadan / uḥibbuka ḥaqqan wa-sh shuhūdu ajal maʿī_

O father of Qasim, the eraser of misguidance, Muhammad, I truly love you and the witnesses are indeed with me.

**23.** عَلَى الْخَدِّ دَمْعِي أَكْتُبُ الشِّعْرَ مَوْهِنًا / عَلَى الطِّرْسِ فِي حَالٍ تَرَاهُ مُوَجِّـــعِ

_ʿAlā-l khaddi damʿī aktubu-sh shiʿra mawninan / ʿalā-ṭ ṭirsi fī ḥālin tarāhu muwajjiʿī_

Upon my cheek are my tears as I write poetry in the late night on the scroll, in a state you see as painful.

**24.** فَمَا لَذَّ عَيْشِي فِي سِوَى سَرْدِ مَدْحِــهِ / وَقَدْ شَابَ فَوْدِي وَهْوَ قَدْ عَزَّ مَرْجِعِي

_Fa-mā ladhdha ʿayshī fī siwā sardi madḥihi / wa qad shāba fawdī wa huwa qad ʿazza marjaʿī_

My life has no sweetness except in the narration of his praise; my hair has turned gray and my return has become dear to me.

**25.** عَلَيْـــــكَ صَــــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُـــمَّ سَلاَمُــهُ / أَقَضَّــتْ جِنَايَاتِي حَبِيبِيَ مَضْجَعِــي

_ʿAlayka ṣalātu-llāhi thumma salāmuhu / aqaḍḍat jināyātī ḥabībī maḍjaʿī_

Upon you be the blessings of Allah and then His peace; my sins have made my bed restless, O my beloved.

**26.** عَلَيْــــــكَ صَـــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُـــمَّ سَلاَمُــهُ / تُنِيرُ فُـؤَادِي ثُمَّ عَيْنِـــي وَمَسْمَعِــي

_ʿAlayka ṣalātu-llāhi thumma salāmuhu / tunīru fu’ādī thumma ʿaynī wa masmaʿī_

Upon you be the blessings of Allah and then His peace; may they enlighten my heart, then my eye and my hearing.

**27.** عَلَيْـــــكَ صَـــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُــــمَّ سَلاَمُــهُ / فَكُنْ فَيْئَتِي مَهْمَا جَزِعْتُ وَمَفْزَعِي

_ʿAlayka ṣalātu-llāhi thumma salāmuhu / fa-kun fay’atī mahmā jaziʿtu wa mafzaʿī_

Upon you be the blessings of Allah and then His peace; so be my refuge whenever I am anxious and my place of safety.

**28.** عَلَيْــــــكَ صَـــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُـــمَّ سَلاَمُــهُ / فَكُنْ لِي شَفِيعًا إِنْ طُرِحْـــتُ بِبَلْقَــعِ

_ʿAlayka ṣalātu-llāhi thumma salāmuhu / fa-kun liy shafīʿan in ṭuriḥtu bi-balqaʿī_

Upon you be the blessings of Allah and then His peace; so be my intercessor if I am cast into a wasteland.

**29.** عَلَيْــــــكَ صَـــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُـــمَّ سَلاَمُــهُ / قَدْ أَخْلَصْتُ حُبِّي فِيكَ دُونَ تَصَنُّــعِ

_ʿAlayka ṣalātu-llāhi thumma salāmuhu / qad akhlaṣtu ḥubbī fīka dūna taṣannuʿī_

Upon you be the blessings of Allah and then His peace; I have purified my love for you without any pretension.

**30.** عَلَيْــــــكَ صَـــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُــمَّ سَلاَمُــهُ / فَلَمْ أَرَ غَيْرَ الْهَاشِمِي لِيَ مَجْزَعِي

_ʿAlayka ṣalātu-llāhi thumma salāmuhu / fa-lam ara ghayra-l hāshimī liy majzaʿī_

Upon you be the blessings of Allah and then His peace; for I have seen none other than the Hashemite as my refuge.

**31.** عَلَيْـــكَ صَـــلاَةُ اللّٰهِ ثُـــمَّ سَلاَمُــهُ / وَآلٍ وَصَحْبٍ كُلِّ أَتْقَى وَأَوْرَعِ

_ʿAlayka ṣalātu-llāhi thumma salāmuhu / wa ālin wa ṣaḥbin kulli atqā wa awraʿī_

Upon you be the blessings of Allah and then His peace, and upon the Family and Companions, all most God-fearing and pious.
